Money

Spain is in the eurozone so for visitors from non-euro countries you will need to change your money, travellers cheques or draw cash on your debit or credit cards. Banks are open from 08.30 until 13.30 or 14.30 weekdays only barring fiestas, of which there are many. You can change money or travellers cheques and sometimes withdraw cash on a credit card in most banks but you will need your passport as identification. You may need your passport again if you use your credit card in shops and restaurants. You can also withdraw cash from cash machines with your credit and debit cards.

Telephones

If you have a mobile phone, inform your service provider prior to travelling to Spain and you should be able to send and receive calls on your mobile phone. Be aware it costs to receive calls from your home country and calls home can be expensive. Your service provider should be able to furnish a price list.

You can use public phones either paying cash or much cheaper, calling cards. These are usually discounted and can be bought from tobacconists (tabacs) or papershops (prensas). In many towns and cities there are businesses set up to offer international calls. These also often combine internet access with their phone business and of course the internet is another great way to keep in touch.

For those who wish to use the internet out and about, “WIFI” spots can be found in some towns and major cities although they are less widespread in Spain than say the U.K.

To dial the U.K you need to place 0044 before the local dial code minus the “0” ie. 0044 161 where the local area code is “0161”. For people to call Spain they need to place 0034 before the number you wish to call.

Tipping

Tipping is common place in Spain and is usually around 7-10% of the bill. Small change will be sufficient for all other situations. For those of you familiar with France and french restaurants which operate a service charge you will notice the Spanish do not, this is why a tip is expected.

Emergencies

In case of an emergency and need to call the services you need to dial 112

Police

There are national police, traffic police, regional police and local police all of whom are generally helpful although levels of English can vary drastically. Police stations will usually have an English speaking officer or an interpreter. Local police in holiday areas are more likely to speak English and are very approachable.
