Best rate for your
holiday
It's more
important than ever to get the best rate you can. You can
"lock in" to a favourable exchange rate between the pound
and the euro or dollar by using a prepaid travel card –
usually a cheaper way of getting travel money than either
buying currency or travellers cheques or using your credit
or debit card abroad.
Two of the
best prepaid cards are operated by Fairfax and Caxton FX.
Both beat the exchange rate you would get for cash, and you
can use them like a debit card (with a pin number) as well
as to withdraw cash.
You can put
cash onto your cards online. If you lose your card the
provider will replace it for around £10, and you'll get the
money that was on the card
back.
Both Caxton
and Fairfax offer cards in both euros and dollars. If you
want money in any other currency, you can buy a prepaid
global card, which will calculate the exchange rate for any
currency at the point of use, but will keep the money on the
card in sterling.
For euros or
dollars, the price you pay for your currency is paid on the
day of loading. If the exchange rate changes after that, you
will either gain or lose out.
There are a
few credit and debit cards that are cheaper to use abroad
than the prepaid cards, although the difference is not
huge.
Look for cards
that do not charge an extra ''load'' when you use them
abroad, and do not charge cash withdrawal fees, or interest
charges even if you pay off your credit card in full, or
impose an extra penalty each time you spend
abroad.
Some of the
best include Saga Platinum (for over 50s only), Post Office
Platinum, Santander Zero and the Nationwide gold card
in Europe.
However, using
these cards means that you are subject to the vagaries of
exchange rates while you are on holiday, rather than locking
in to rates with a prepaid card. Always check the terms
before using any credit or debit card abroad, as most of
them could cost you very dear
indeed.
You'll find
the worst exchange rates will come from buying currency at
the airport or Eurostar terminal. So if you don't feel
comfortable heading abroad without some actual cash in your
hand, make sure you buy it well in
advance.
